4 1/2 Months … or less

April 22, 2009

I’m a little behind on the countdown, unfortunately; it’s been one of those months where 10,000 different things needed attention. Thankfully, the worst of that is behind and it’s back to cruise control.

As the title of the post suggests, it seems that I might actually have an opportunity to head to Cancun sooner than planned. Everything has worked out really well so far; business is good, preparations are good, and I’m feeling pretty good about the relocation. It’s an exciting time although the super planner in me is dying to have an exact date. It just happens that this is one of those things, where the target is moving — but closer, to be sure!

6 Months

February 28, 2009

It’s crazy to think that February is already over; it means there are only 6 months left before I’ll be in Cancun. It’s both exhilarating and stressful, but mostly the former!

After another month researching a place to live, I’m now quite relieved to  have a concrete destination (SM 31/32) as well as finding evidence that there are ample places available that suit my needs and budget.  I didn’t get in touch with the immigration lawyer yet, but decided to put that on hold until April or so, as I need to finalize some other details.

February was also good for business; I found an interesting indie project to do the programming for and we are looking at a release this Summer. That will complete one of my 4 resolutions for 2009.

Finally, relocating to Cancun has started to affect my life. My current lease is effectively up in March and I didn’t want to sign a lease again since I’ll be leaving relatively soon. So, I took to the internet and found a great roommate and place to live the next 6 months. While it’s not moving to Cancun, I consider it a kind of ‘baby-step’: without an active lease there is one less thing tying me down here, and I’m packing up everything that won’t be going to Cancun and taking it to storage at my dad’s place soon. The realization of relocating is becoming tangible…and it feels good.

7 Months

February 1, 2009

Like the blink of any eye, January has come and gone. February marks the slow warming as Winter preps to give way to Spring next month. It also means that one month has officially passed since I began to make serious plans to relocate, leaving 7 more months to get things in order.

The past month was of mixed success as far as preparation goes. The most tangible success was finally offloading my stupidly-expensive car; part of my plan to eliminate debt. Beyond that, I did a ton of research and learned a lot about obtaining an FM3, living possibilities in Cancun, and Mexican customs regulations. January was also the beginning of my intensive push to reinvigorate my Spanish skills.

In regard to my goals for February, I’d like to continue the house-hunting. A gracious and informative expat in Cancun has given me a terrific detailing of the good and the bad as far as neighborhoods go, so it should be much easier to constrict my search efforts. I also want to make initial contact with an immigration attorney that has come highly recommended and at least discuss the kinks of obtaining an FM3 via self-employment. Apart from that, it’s more of the usual: keep up my Spanish studies, pay down student loans, save money.

But for now, back to work.
